SC Collegium transfers Delhi HC judge after cash recovery at his residence.

According news of The Indian Express THE SUPREME COURT Collegium met Thursday evening and decided to transfer Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma back to his parent Allahabad High Court following an adverse report about recovery of cash during a fire at his residence.

Highly-placed sources said the Supreme Court’s five-member collegium unanimously resolved to recommend the transfer after the collegium members were apprised of a video purportedly of burning cash at Justice Varma’s residence.





The sources said there was, however, no estimate of the quantum of cash at the residence. After the CJI explained what had happened, there was no doubt in the judges’ mind that Justice Varma should be transferred out, said a source aware of the developments.

According to sources When the fire broke out on March 14, Justice Varma was not home and fire tenders and police who reached the spot to douse the flames allegedly stumbled on the money in a room, the sources said.

This was communicated to the higher ups in the police and consequently, to governmental authorities who in turn intimated the office of the Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.

The CJI called for a meeting of the five-member Collegium on Thursday to discuss what should be done in the case. Sources said the Collegium members were of the view that the development is distressing and unanimously resolved to recommend transfer.

The sources said that some of the members were also of the view that an in-house inquiry should be conducted, but a final call on this has to be taken by the CJI. The Collegium resolution on the recommendation to transfer the judge is yet to be uploaded.
